The Media and the Treaty
Media and te Tiriti
Kupu Taea has put out a checklist for media consumers about news items on Maori issues and te Tiriti in an A4 version. The four-page checklist includes common negative media frames about Maori, the item’s use of sources and te reo Maori, and absences that may unbalance articles. It also includes actions consumers can take about items that undermine Maori and te Tiriti, with examples. Actions include campaigns, complaints to standards bodies, boycotts and protests. It was produced to encourage Maori and non-Maori media consumers to get active against negative representations of Maori by news media.
